Dentures are a removable appliance that restores the function and aesthetics of your smile. Dentures make it easier to eat and speak than it would be without teeth. Dentures can also help fill out your face. When you lose all of your teeth, your facial muscles can sag. Because dentures are designed to closely resemble your natural teeth, the change in your appearance will be nearly indistinguishable.
Types Of Dentures
These are the most common types of dentures:
•Conventional –
•A conventional denture is fabricated and placed in your mouth after your remaining teeth have been removed. Before we can place a conventional denture, your tissues and bone must be fully healed, which can take several months.
•Immediate –
•An immediate denture is prefabricated and inserted on the same day as your tooth extractions. During a preliminary visit, Dr. Bernard Ang will take measurements of your mouth and make a model. With an immediate denture, you do not have to be without teeth while you heal. However, your denture will have to be adjusted several times, as your gum tissue and bone shrink during the healing process. In most cases, an immediate denture is considered a temporary measure, until we make your conventional one.
•Overdenture –
•An overdenture is supported by a small number of remaining teeth or dental implants. This appliance can help preserve your jaw bone and offers greater stability than other options.
•Partial –
•A partial denture is used to replace one or more adjacent, missing teeth. The denture rests on a metal framework that clips around your natural teeth. The clasps can sometimes be visible, which is why crowns can also be used as support structures.
Caring For Your New Denture
After you receive your dentures, Dr. Bernard Ang will give you a set of detailed instructions that teach you how to care for your new appliance. Like your natural teeth, your dentures should be brushed daily to remove food particles and plaque. This will also help prevent the prosthetic teeth from staining. Be sure to use a soft bristle toothbrush and non-abrasive cleanser, so your dentures do not scratch. It is also important to brush your gums, tongue, and palate every morning before you place your denture. This helps you avoid infection and stimulates circulation in your tissues.
There are also certain steps you can take to help increase the longevity of your dentures. When handling your dentures, be sure to stand over a bowl of water or a soft towel, as dentures are delicate. Never let your dentures dry out. Always place them in a cleaner solution or plain water when they are not in your mouth. Also, make sure never to use hot water as this can cause them to warp.
As time progresses, Dr. Bernard Ang will have to reline, rebase, or remake your dentures due to normal wear. Your gum tissue and underlying bone also ages and may cause your dentures to become loose. This may affect the way you chew and speak. Be sure to schedule an appointment as soon as possible if you notice any issues.
