How long does a tooth extraction take?

Extracting a tooth doesn’t take very long at all. On average, a single tooth will take 20-40 minutes. With multiple teeth, it may take longer.

What do I do after a tooth extraction?

We advise you to rest and follow the aftercare instructions we provide you.

How long after a tooth extraction can I eat?

Eating is fine after a procedure, as long as you’re eating soft foods that won’t harm your surgical site. We’ll provide you a list of foods to eat after your extraction.

What do I do if the site of my extraction is infected?

After surgery, your tooth can be very vulnerable. Without proper hygiene, it’s prone to infection.

Dry socket is a condition in which the blood clot formed in your tooth’s empty socket is dislodged or harmed. This blood clot protects your socket, and without it, it can be compromised.

If your extraction site is infected, call Amherst Village Dental at 603-673-5510 so we can help you. We may be able to prescribe antibiotics for your infection.

How long after a tooth extraction can I smoke?
If possible, we advise you to hold off on smoking for as long as you can after the procedure. Ideally, not smoking for at least 72 hours after your extraction will be best, as it will greatly reduce your risk of developing dry socket and infection.
How long does it take to recover from a tooth extraction?

It can take about a week to fully recover from a tooth extraction, but oftentimes you can return to your normal routine the day after a procedure. If possible, we recommend resting for at least 24 hours after your visit.

Is tooth extraction painful?

Tooth extractions are generally not painful. We’ll use a local anesthetic to numb the area and can administer sedation dentistry to ease your anxiety through the procedure.

Should I feel pain in the days after my tooth extraction?

Some pain and discomfort after an extraction are normal, and you can take painkillers as prescribed. If you are experiencing harsh pain more than a week after your procedure, call us so we can help you find relief.

Can a tooth extraction cause other teeth to hurt?

Sometimes, teeth can be connected by the same nerves, so it’s possible they might feel some pain after an extraction.
