As it has been found that the Novel Corona virus is susceptible to breakdown and deterioration by using this simple rinse, we have added this protective step before our protocols, and will continue to use this preventative practice moving forward at the start of each appointment. [This is the current – 2020 – recommendation provided by the ADA].
Is it safe? Hydrogen peroxide has been utilized in dentistry for more than 70 years. It is also used widely in whitening products, toothpastes, and additional more recent research shows how hydrogen peroxide can help with the destruction of periodontal pathogens. However, today there are currently prescription rinses available that are specifically designed for our periodontal patients to help manage periodontal disease which also contain hydrogen peroxide. Don’t do this regularly at home! While it has it’s benefits, rinsing daily with over the counter hydrogen peroxide could have negative effects on oral tissues, especially when used at too high a concentration and/or over a prolonged period of time. So we strongly advise our patients to avoid using this technique at home outside of a clinician’s care.
We hope this helps you understand our adoption of using a pre-procedural rinse, and that it is both an advisable and safe choice for our patients. As always, our goal is to ensure that our dental health care team is able to maintain a safe dental environment for all.
