Dental Implants

Patients who have recently lost teeth will probably consider either dentures or dental implants to fill in the empty space. Dentures do have their benefits. However, implants are more geared towards mimicking the appearance and functionality of natural teeth. At Amherst Village Dental, our team wants our patients to receive proper dental restoration.

What Are Implants?

The process of installing a dental implant begins with adding a screw-like implant to the jawbone. Our team then places the abutment on top of the implant, holding the abutment in place with additional smaller screws. The entire process - starting with the first consultation and ending when the bond between the jaw and the implant is stable - can last anywhere from two to six months.

Our dental implant services include:

What Are the Benefits of Dental Implants?

Because dental implants are anchored in place, they are less likely to shift, move around, or fall out of the mouth. Due to the nature of dental implants, they look and act like natural teeth, and they do not need to be removed on a daily or nightly basis. Cleaning a dental implant is similar to cleaning a natural tooth: brush twice a day and floss daily. (However, patients are urged to use toothpastes that do not contain abrasive chemicals as those chemicals can scratch and damage the dental implants). Additionally, implants can replace as many or as few missing teeth as there are in the mouth. It’s also worth noting that the bond between the implant and the jawbone becomes a molecular bond within six to eight weeks, meaning that the only way for an implant to be removed would be to remove the bone around it. Dental implants are a very flexible tooth restoration method making them a good fit for many people.

The Cost of Dental Implants

Dental implants can be costly, due to the combination of the materials for the dental implants, the complexity of the operations, and the appointments leading up to the installations. One factor that might outweigh the cost is the longevity of dental implants; dental implants can last for decades or for the lifetime of the patient provided that the patient practices good oral care. Dentures last up to 10 years with good care. Our team understands, however, that implants are not cheap, making them not feasible for everyone. Fortunately, there are solutions that are similar to traditional implants and that are more affordable.
